The Fall of Google.com - Worlds Number One Internet Search Engine
On 17th September 2007, Mark Simon wrote an interesting article called 3 ways Google Could Lose. It’s a great article detailing 3 main reasons that could lead to the fall of Google Inc. - the world’s number 1 Internet search engine corporation.
What I find interesting about the whole article is the fact that out of the three main reasons mentioned, 2 are mainly affected by external factors while reason number 2 (Facebook) is actually a threat from rivals on the Internet.
While Google is the clear leader so far and would most likely be leading all the way to 2017, are advertisers and merchants losing big market shares by not getting their hands wet on social media marketing?
Clearly, social media marketing is growing by the minute and it proves to be a great media space for various businesses. Gone are the days with the mentality that “If you’re not on TV, you’re nothing big”. The way I see it, if you’re not online, you’re lacking way behind.
Anyway, checkout the 3 main reasons he listed down below:
Here’s a glimpse of the article…
AFTER A MEDIOCRE Q2 EARNINGS call and attacks from both piracy victims and privacy defenders, Google is still the online king. Can anything bring it down?
I think the answer is yes, for a lot of reasons. This week I’ll list just three areas of risk that Google faces.
(Without going into all the glory details, here are the 3 reasons he mentioned)
- Risk Number 1 - Recession
- Ad budgets are the first to get slashed when the economy heads south. If the economy does go sour, it may not only be traditional advertising that gets hurt. Online advertising, including search advertising, may take a hit as well…- Risk Number 2 - Facebook
- Could a social networking site overtake a top-tier search engine? As fellow Insider David Berkowitz wrote earlier this month, one has already come close. ComScore’s data from July points to MySpace as the fourth-most popular search destination on the Web, beating AOL by 139 million searchers….- Risk Number 3 - Employees
- “Since they’ve already made their millions, there’s little keeping Google’s first hires from heading off to start something new, become investors, or just spend time with family. Which is why one of the oldest — yet ongoing — dangers to Google, is the attrition of its original bright talent. Indeed, the San Francisco Chronicle reports that “100 of Google’s first 300 workers have quietly resigned” from the company already….As Google moves from hip startup to megaconglomerate, will it still be able to hold its ship together? We’ll have to see. If anyone can make the jump smoothly, Google can, but it will still be a monumental task.
OK — for now. With a clear lead in search and predictions that it will take 90% of all searches by 2017, Google is doing all right.

Google just grows stronger by 7% in US search, reported by hitwise.com.

I’m surprised it’s only 7%! Google’s growing stronger with every click these days.
The question is, how long will they remain king? 10 years? 20?
“While Google is the clear leader so far and would most likely be leading all the way to 2017, are advertisers and merchants losing big market shares by not getting their hands wet on social media marketing?”
As mentioned, Google is NOT THE ONLY place merchants and advertisers should look at.

it is easy to grow 100% or more when you are starting up. but the growth will saturate once it reach to a maturity point. same goes to quality. it is very easy to reduce defects part per million from 1000 to 10. but to reduce from 10 to 1 is even more difficult and if not practically impossible.
sometimes the percentage is not the sole criterion- absolute value needs to be look at as well.
google will remain king as long as they are competitive. i do not see any guaranteed timeline for them to be the king. who knows, tomorrow kuanyew.com may overtake them just like that. that’s technology.
even microsoft is in danger of losing market share with the emergence of more open source solutions. another reason affecting microsoft is the sanction imposed to them by the court of laws. i am not arguing whether the rulings are justified or not, but it shows that a company can survive when they keep themselves competitive amongst external factors.
that being said, i am for advertisers and merchants to capitalize on the google phenomenon. if it gives you good money, then why not? and if it can last you for another 10 years, why not? it beats the crap out of sticking 10 years with a start up and unproven marketing platform.
just my few ringgits thoughts.
